White Ribbon bags top prize at Cannes

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Austrian director Michael Haneke’s sombre black-and-white drama the “White Ribbon”, a chilling account of a German village in the build up to World War 1 walked away with the Palme d’ Or for the Best Film at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.

Haneke beat off competition from French director Jacques Audiard’s A Prophet, Jane Campion’s period drama Bright Star, Pedro Almodovar’s Broken Embraces and Quentin Tarantino’s World War 2 film Inglourious Basterds to win the top prize on Sunday night in a gala award ceremony. The Austrian helmer, who had won the best director prize at Cannes in 2005 for his French film Cache( Hidden ), examines themes of communal guilt, distrust and puinishment among residents of small German village on the eve of World War 1 through his brilliantly crafted 20th century drama.

French director Jacques Audiard, who was a favourite to win Palme d’Or, managed to scoop runner-up Grand Prix award for his gripping prison story A Prophet. The Jury, led by French actress Isabelle Huppert, which included Indian actress Sharmila Tagore, Hollywood’s Robin Wright Penn, Italy’s Asia Argento and Taiwan’s Shu Qi, handed out the Best Director trophy to Brilliante Mendoza from the Phillipines for Kinatay, a story based on kidnap, rape and murder incidents.

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

At least 23 people were killed after Cyclone Aila hit West Bengal’s South 24-Parganas and left its impact on six adjoining districts as well as the entire Kolkata metropolitan area on Monday. Over one lakh people were affected.

Uninterrupted rain with windspeeds of 80-100 kmph brought normal life to a standstill and totally disrupted rail and air services. No flights could land or take off at Kolkata airport from 2pm. The state administration asked the people to stay indoors and schools to be closed down by 2 pm. The met department had some good news late on Monday, said that the cyclone had started gradually weakening. Heavy rain is, however, expected to continue all through Tuesday.

Expressing deep concern, West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee chaired a high-level emergency meeting in the morning at Writers’ Buildings, the state secretariat.

“Eighteen people have so fvar been killed by the cyclone, which has severely damaged Sandeshkhali in North 24-Parganas. Sagar, Namkhana, Canning, Patharpratima, Kakdwip in South 24-Parganas have also been affected,” Mr Bhattacharjee said. Later, two more deaths were reported.

Israeli Awacs in India, induction on Thursday

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

India on Monday became the first country in South Asia to own an Airborne Early Warning and Control System( Awacs ), called “an eye in the sky” with the Israeli-made Phalcon reaching Jamnagar airbase on the country’s western coast on Monday morning.

The Phalcons would now be formally inducted into the Indian Air Force( IAF ) on May 28 by defence minister A.K. Antony at the Palam airbase in the capital, IAF sources said. The Awacs, which arrived here about 18 months behind schedule, would provide IAF the means to keep a tab on enemy aircraft and missiles taking off from across the border, thereby alerting response defensive systems.

The Phalcon, mounted on Russian Ilyushin-76 heavy lift transport aircraft’s airframe, had left Israel on Sunday and IAF pilots flew the first of the three aircraft mounted radar system to India. Jamnagar would be its first stop, followed by Palam on Tuesday, before it reaches Agra, which woudl be its homebase, sources said. The delivery of the $1.1 billion Awacs was previously scheduled on May 18, but last minute technical check ups delayed its departure from Israel, sources said. The remaining two Awacs, under the tripartite deal between India, Israel and Russia, would be delivered by mid or late 2010, IAF sources said.

North Korea conducts second N-Test

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

North Korea announced on Monday that it had successfully conducted its second nuclear test, defying international warnings and dramatically raising the stakes in a global effort to persuade the recalcitrant Communist state to give up its weapons program. The North’s official news agency, KCNA, said, “The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea successfully conducted one more underground nuclear test on May 25 as part of the measures to bolster up its nuclear deterrent for self-defence in every way as requested by its scientists and technicians.”

The test was safely conducted “on a new higher level in terms of its explosive power and technology of its control,” the agency said. “The results of the test helped satisfactorily settle the scientific and technological problems arising in further increasing the power of nuclear weapons and steadily developing nuclear technology.” The test appeared to have caught South Korea and the United States off guard, and the news hit just as South Korea’s government and people were mourning the suicide of former President Roh Moo-hyun.

LTTE destroyed : Lanka

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Asserting that the LTTE has been ‘totally destroyed”, Sri Lanka has said that Tamil Tigers or other terrorist outfits will not be allowed to take roots in the country again. Disclosing that more than 10,000n LTTE cadres had surrounded before the Government, defence secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa made it clear that the criminal elements among the surrendered Tiger cadres would be brought to book while others will be rehabiliated.

“Criminals among the surrendered rebels will be dealth with seriously and the rest will be rehabiliated,” he said. “LTTE has been totally destroyed by the security forces and there is no way it can revive itself in the country,” Rajapaksa said. He said several human rights organizations employed in Sri Lanka in the recent past were keen on saving the LTTE leaders and not the displaced civilians.

“Hence the governemnt identified their real objectives and acted accordingly,” he told a TV channel.

Mr Rajapaksa said that the government will never “disturb media freedom” in Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Mr Rajapaksa also called on the international community and the United Nations to assist in arresting the LTTE arms producer K Pathmanathan.

Wild leopard hunt in Gilani’s garden

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Pakistani Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has an “internal threat” of another kind as a life-threatning leopard entered the premises of his official residence here, officials said.

Mr Gilani, who has been warned by the Taliban to stop military operation in the Swat and Malakand districts, has asked the security officials to get hold of the wild leopard before it inflicts any damage. “The Prime Minister wants the security to catch the leopard live and then shift it to the wildlife department,” an official at the Prime Minister’s House said to a news agency. “The security officials spent several hours on Monday to catch the beast but failed. They are seeking the permission to shoot it”, the officials added.

Another official said the Prime Minister’s office wants the wildlife department to make arrangements to catch the leopard live. “The Prime Minister does not want to kill the leopard. He thinks it will be inhuman. The leopard has come from the nearby jungle. It is wild and has not fled from any zoo”, he said.
