Iraq declares victory as US troops leave cities

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Iraq’s Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki declared victory on Saturday as the country began to end a foreign occupation with the withdrawl of US combat troops from cities, and told Iraqis not to lose faith if the pullback resulted in attacks. As part of a security pact signed between Baghdad and Washington last year, US combat forces must leave urban centres by June 30 and the entire force that invaded Iraq in 2003 must be gone by 2012.

“It is a great victory for Iraqis that we are taking the first step towards ending the foreign presence in Iraq,” Mr Maliki told a conference of leaders from the ethnic Turkmen community.

“I, and you, are sure that many don’t want us to succeed and celebrate this victory. They are getting themselves ready to move in the dark to destabilise the situation, but we will be ready for them, God willing.” A series of devastating bomb attacks in April cast doubt on the ability of Iraqi security forces to take over from US troops in protecting the population from mainly Sunni Islamist insurgents, including Al-Qaeda, and other violent groups.

Police clash with protesters

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Police officers used tear gas and water cannons to beat back thousands of demonstrators gathering in the capital on Saturday, a day after Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said there would be “bloodshed” if street protests continued over the disputed presidential election.

State television reported that two people had been wounded when a suicide bomber blew himself up at the Tehran shrine of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in the southern part of the city, several miles from the scheduled protests. The report of the blast could not be independently confirmed.

The violence unfolded on a day of extraordinary tension across Iran, as opposition protesters swore to continue pressing their claims of a stolen election against Iran’s embattled and increasingly impatient clerical leadership. Iran’s divisions played out on the streets. Regular security forces stood back and calmly urged protesters to go home and avoid bloodshed, while the feared pro-government militia, the Basij, beat protesters with clubs and electric prods.

India, Nepal agree to resolve border issues

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

India and Nepal on Sunday agreed to set up a high-level bilateral mechanism to resolve the border issues between the two neighbours. The move to set up the bilateral mechanism was decided during the meeting between visiting Indian Foreign Secretary Shivashanker Menon and the new Nepalese Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, at which they also reflected on the current political situation in the country.

Menon, making his second visit to Nepal in the last four months, also extended an invitation to the Prime Minister to visit India, dates for which are being worked out. By setting up a bilateral mechanism on border issues, the two countries hope to take out the sting from a campaign being run by the former ruling Maoists party, which has alleged that India has encroached upon Nepalese territories in Dang district.

Earlier, on his arrival, Mr Menon faced protests at the Kathmandu airport by youths alleging India had occupied Nepal’s territory. Nepal police said about seven to eight young men, seemingly students, tried to show the visiting envoy black flags as he alighted at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. However, police broke up the protest and arrested four of the protesters. “It is a non-political protest,” the Gaushala police station incharge told.

Troops to undergo new training, says US

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

The United States will order all its troops in Afghanistan to undergo new training after concluding that pilots violated orders in air strikes last month that it accepts may have killed as many as 86 civilians.

In a long awaited report, released six weeks after U.S. B1 bombers killed lareg number of civilians unleashing fury among Afghans, the Pentagon acknowledged that rules had not been followed, although it said the mistakes fell short of breaking the law. The bombings took place on May 4 in Western Afghanistan after a day-long battle that saw Afghan security forces ambushed by Taliban fighters and U.S. Marines come to their aid.

After nightfall, B1 bombers observed groups of people moving into two houses and a mosque. Pilots concluded they were fighters and bombed the buildings. However, the report said pilots broke guidelines by striking without checking whether civilians were in the buildings. The strikes, “while complying with the law of armed conflict diod not adhere to all of the specific guidance and Commander’s Intent contained in the controlling directive. Not applying all of that guidance likely resulted in civilian casualities” it said.

India remark unacceptable : Pakistan

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

Apparently irked by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s blunt message to President Asif Ali Zardari in front of media that Pakistan should not allow its soil for terrorism against India, Islamabad on Wednesday said his remarks were “unacceptable”. In a statement made in the Parliament, minister of state for foreign affairs Malik Amad Khan said Mr Singh’s comments made during his meeting with Mr Zardari in Russia were unacceptable to Islamabad. During Tuesday’s meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Russia, Mr Singh told Mr Zardari: I am extremely happy to meet you, but my mandate is limited to telling you that the territory of Pakistan  must not be allowed to be used for terrorism against India.”

Mr Khan said Pakistan had asked the Indian government not to resort to “aggresive media statements” and clear the air by talking directly with Pakistan instead of using the media. “I would still ask India to come to talk as engagements would be fruitful rather than estrangements,” he said. Pakistan will never allow any force to use its soil for terrorist activities directed against any country, he said. “During the past six months, Indian officials uttered some inappropriate statements about their certain reservations which were totally against diplomatic norms,” Mr Khan said.

Coach’s theory defies logic

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

Team India coach Gary Kirsten is barking up the wrong tree when he blames the Indian Premier League for India’s unceremonious exit from the World T20 championship. His logic flies in the face of comments from Ricky Ponting and other Australians that their early exit may have been caused because they did not participate in the IPL this season. In blaming the fatigue factors in Indians on the IPL schedule, Kirsten may not have considered the fact that top players from two of the four teams, plus a couple of prominent West Indians, who are in the T-20 World Cup semi-finals, were active participants in the IPL.

Experts who analysed India’s poor show have already shed light on the tactical weaknesses of the team for which Kirsten has to share the blame with his skipper, M.S Dhoni. Strangely, there is a difference of opinion between the coach and the captain with regard to the IPL with Dhoni categorically saying the IPL was not the cause of the debacle. Analysts have agreed that IPL has enabled players and teams to master the art of Twenty20 cricket. Also, it is readily accepted that IPL has taken away financial insecurities and fear of selection inconsistencies from the minds of players, many of them Indian, and allowed them to focus only on their cricket. The IPL is regarded as a sporting revolution that has transformed cricket.
