IT major Infosys Technologies has incurred a capital expenditure of Rs.63 crore in its three loss-making subsidiaries in China, Mexico and the US last fiscal, the company said in its annual report. “We have invested Rs 22 crore each in infosys Mexico and Infosys Consulting Incorporation based in Texas, US, while making an additional investment of Rs 19 crore in Infosys China during FY 09,” Infosys Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director S Gopalakrishnan said in the report.

During fiscal 2005, the company established Infosys Consulting, a wholly-owned subsidiary in Texas, the US, to add high-end consulting capabilities to its global delivery model and in FY’09, the company serviced 96 clients and generated a revenue of Rs 287 crore with a net loss of Rs 59 crore, the company said in its annual report. The company has so far invested Rs 193 crore( USD 45 million ) in Infosys Consulting, which includes an investment of Rs 81 crore in FY’08. Its wholly-owned subsidiary, Infosys China, was formed to expand its business operations in that country. Infosys China serviced 71 clients and generated a revenue of Rs 129 crore, with a net loss of Rs 11 crore. Its employee strength as on March 2009 was 1,053.

Chipmaker AMD likes taking potshots at big brother Intel. ‘An intelligent space expedition to Mars tomorrow may not help you battle the slowdown; nor can a virtual walkaway through the Taj tomorrow,” the firm’s media invite for its new six-core processor launch said - a refrence to Intel’s new campaign around “Sponsors of Tomorrow”.

It is too early to speculate on whether AMD’s “smarter” six-core Opteron server processor, code-named Istanbul, can help the firm claw back lost market share from Intel. However, argued the new processor, which launched Tuesday, can solve “today’s problems” and is the perfect slowdown product. Globally, Intel has about 89 per cent market share in the x86 server chip market while AMD holds the remaining 11 per cent.

Istanbul is a “catch-up processor” - Intel’s six core Dunnington processors released in September last year - but AMD promises more bang-per-buck because of lower cost of upgrades, better performance and power efficiency benchmarks. More number of chores or processors attached to an integrated circuit theoretically implies the ability to run multiple applications more efficiently, offering end-users - in this case enterprises - performance as well as productivity benefits over chips with lower cores. Istanbul is being offered in  two-socket, four-socket, eight-socket configurations and claims 34 per cent more performance per watt than the quad-core Shanghai processor.

Microsoft Corp offered a glimpse into a future where the Xbox 360 console is the centerpiece of any living room, games, social interaction and communications are controlled with the wave of a hand.

At a star-studded event at the annual E3 video game conference that that drew appearances by Paul McCartney and Steven Spielberg, the company unveiled “Project Natal”, which uses a camera to track a user’s movements via full skeletal mapping. It also recognises voices and vocal commands. The technology obviates the need for a controller or remote device to enable a player for instance to drive a car in a game, interact with a character on screen or show pictures and information to other Xbox 360 users over the Internet.

“You are the controller,” Shane Kim, Microsoft’s vice president of strategy and business development for videogames, said in an interview in Los Angeles. Microsoft also said it planned to boost its Xbox 360 gaming console by integrating music-streaming service last.fm and Web social network Facebook and microblogging site Twitter into its Xbox Live online community.

The impact to Indian IT service providers from US automaker General Motors Corporation’s bankruptcy will be minimal, experts said. In the first three quarters of fiscal year 2009, GM outsourced IT services work worth just $67 million to Indian vendors, sources informed. While TCS and Wipro’s exposure amounted to about $44 million of the total, Satyam had work valued at $13 million, sources mentioned.

GM’s engagement in FY09 was a tad lower compared to FY08, sources noted. When reached for clarifications, TCS. Wipro and Satyam said their exposure to GM was not significant. The immediate impact on Indian service providers may show up in delayed payments from GM, followed by slow ramping down of existing projects, engagement manager at Zinnov Management Consulting Karthik Ananth said. Even in the long-term, service providers may not have much to look ahead from the company.

Meanwhile, major assets of GM are expected to be sold and most of them may be acquired by private investors or auto majors from Korea, China and even India.  These countries would in the long term become potential clients for Indian service providers.

Pakistan with about 60 nuclear warheads primarily targeted at India, is continuing production of fissile material for weapons and adding to its weapons production facilities and delivery vehicles, a US Congressional report has said.

The latest report by Congressional Research Service( CRS ) - a research wing of the US Congress which prepares reports for Congress men - has confirmed the recent statements and media reports that Pakistan was expanding its nuclear arsenal. “Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal consists of approximately 60 nuclear warheads. It continues fissile material production for weapons, and is adding to its weapons production facilities and delivery vehicles,” said the report “Pakistan’s Nuclear Weapons: Proliferation and Security Issues”, which was issued on Thursday for media.

About 10,000 security personnel are guarding Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal and Western fears about the safety of the weapons are unfounded, a senior official has said. Air Commodore Khalid Banuri said that Pakistan’s “command and control structure” for the weapons was better than that of many other nuclear armed states, and many countries had officially acknowledged this, Dawn News reported last week.

Stem cells cultured by researchers on a simple contact lens miraculously restored sight to sufferers of blinding corneal disease. The simple and inexpensive procedure, considered a breakthrough, requires a minimal hospital stay and significantly improves vision within weeks.

University of New South Wales ( UNSW ) researchers from its School of Medical Sciences harvested stem cells from patients’ own eyes to rehabiliate the damaged cornea. The stem cells were cultured on a common therapeutic contact lens which was then placed onto the damaged cornea for 10 days, during which the cells were able to re-colonise the damaged eye surface.

While the novel procedure was used to rehabiliate damaged corneas, the researchers say it offers hope to people with a range of blinding eye conditions and could have applications in other organs. The trial was conducted on three patients; two with extensive corneal damage resulting from multiple surgeries to remove ocular melanomas ( a cancer of the eye ), and one with the genetic eye condition aniridia. Other causes of cornea damage can include chemical or thermal burns, bacteria infection.
