Ronaldo’s jersey sells like hot cakes

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

Real Madrid sold 15 Cristiano Ronaldo jerseys per minute at the club’s shop at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in the two hours that followed the player’s presentation on Monday, reports said on Wednesday. The shop sold 2,000 jerseys bearing the Portugese striker’s name and the number nine once sported by the club legend Alfredo di Stefano during the period at 85 euros( 118 dollars ) each for a total revenue of 170,000 euros, sports dailies AS and Marca reported.

In the rush, 300 black and white Ronaldo jerseys were also stolen. The “Cristiano-mania” continued on Tuesday as the adult size jerseys were sold out at the shop. The 24-year old Ronaldo did much better than the Real’s other big name new recruit, Brazil’s Kaka, who joined the Spanish giants from AC milan in early June for 65 million euros.

During the two hours that followed the 27-year old’s presentation on June 30, the shop sold 600 Kaka jerseys of five per minute. Some 75,000 people turned out for the official unveiling of Ronaldo, compared to the 55,000 who turned out to welcome Kaka to Real.

Ronaldo joined Real from Manchester United in June on a six-year deal worth around 94 million euros and he will  reportedly be paid 13 million euros each season, making him the most expensive player in the world. Real is the world’s largest revenue-generating club in the world, ahead of Manchester United and Barcelona, according to an annual ranking compiled by business advisory firm Deloitte. The club boosted revenues from sales of jerseys and other souvenirs after it began signing top world players like France’s Zinedine Zidane and England’s David Beckham in 2000.

Obama calls for peace

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

US President Barack Obama urged Pope Benedict XVI on Friday to keep reminding all parties to Middle East peace efforts of their “responsibilities,” the White House said. During a rough 30-minute, one-on-one talk at the Vatican, Mr Obama underlined his commitment to ending the Arab-Israeli conflict and “expressed appreciation for the long standing efforts of the Holy See and the Pope himself in promoting that,” deputy US national security adviser Denis McDonough told reporters.

The US President told the pontiff that “all sides have responsibilities in this effort” and vowed to continue delivering that message, McDonough said aboard Obama’s official Air Force One airplane as he traveled to Ghana. Mr Obama also “expressed his hope that the holy father would continue to do that as well, including responsibilities that we believe are important, not just from Israelis but also from the neighbouring Arab states,” said Mr McDonough.

Mr Obama promised Pope Benedict XVI on Friday as they met for the first time that he would try to reduce the number of abortions in the United States, the Vatican said. The US President and the pontiff also discussed Middle-East peace, Mr Obama’s efforts to reach out to the Muslim world, immigration reforms and sensitive bioethics matters in talks that lasted about 40 minutes, both sides said.

Infosys tops expectations

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

There is no heartening news yet. Although Infosys beat street expectations for the quarter ending June, India’s second largest software services exporter is clearly not out of the woods; nor is the IT industry. The economic green shoots that emerged early in the quarter have quickly disappeared. And conflicting data is not helping things. In the US, the IT industry’s main revenue geography, unemployment is up and retail sales are down. However, housing starts are beginning to grow.

The contradictory data is impacting customer behaviour. Deals are now scrutinised much more than they were last year, leading to project delys. Infosys’ business volumes dipped 1.1 per cent during the quarter. Suddenly, the industry’s punch line - when enterprises want to reduce costs, outsourcing will be the darling - no longer appears to be working. Of course, the customers are more price sensitive. Infosys expects prices for the year ending March 2010 to dip by 5 per cent. The company’s full year guidance is a great summary of the volatile environment : In dollars, it expects revenues to decline between 4.6 and 3.1 per cent if FY2010. Last quarter, for the first time in the history of the company, it had indicated that revenues could decline for the full year.

Google now plans PC OS

Friday, July 10th, 2009

A year and a half from now, you may see a new choice in the computer aisle of your local electronics store : little laptops or notebooks, with an operating system made by Google instead of Microsoft. Google announced that it will make a personal computer operating system, to be called Chrome OS, based on the Linux operating system.

The main advantage of Chrome OS is that it is free. Microsoft’s Windows 7 is reported to cost netbook makers at least $45 per computer. Even if Microsoft is forced to cut the price to the $25 level that it has been charging netbook makers for its ancient Windows XP system, a Chrome netbook may well be in stores for $30 to $50 less than an equivalent Windows machine.

This is how Google describes the experience it is trying to create : People want to get to their e-mail instantly, without wasting time waiting for their computers to boot and browsers to stand up. They want their computers to always run as fast as when they first bought them. They want their data to be accessible to them wherever they are and not have to worry about losing their computer or forgetting to back up files. Even more importantly, they do not want to spend hours configuring their computers to work with every new piece of hardware, or have to worry about constant software updates.

So what do all my blog readers think about it? Would you buy a Web-oriented computer with a Google opearting system? Or is there something special about Windows and its applications for which you would be willing to pay an additional $50 ? Drop in your comments and let us know.

Web holds up during MJ’s tribute service

Friday, July 10th, 2009

As news of Michael Jackson’s death began to spread last Thursday, the flood of people seeking information about the singer overloaded several websites and services. Many expected the same on Tuesday, when a memorial and tribute service was held in Los Angeles to celebrate the pop icon. The event drew millions of fans and spectators, both online and off, but this time the Internet did not crack under the stain.

“Over all, the Internet is holding up great,” said Jennifer Donovan, a spokeswoman for Akamai, a company that handles Internet traffic for variety of large clients. “We have not heard of any sites being down during this event.”

Traffic to news sites supported by Akamai peaked at 3.9 million visitors a minute at the start of the memorial service before sharply dropping off, suggesting that people were sticking with the live video streams rather than surfing around. By comparison, on June 25, when word began to circulate of Michael Jackson’s hospitalisation and death, Akamai said that traffic to news websites topped out at 4.2 million visitors a minute. Traffic to live video streams drew the most attention : As of 3 pm New York time, close to three million video streams were being watched online, about three times the average, according to Akamai.

As it did for the inauguration, Facebook teamed with CNN.com to put a stream of personal status updates next to live video coverage of the memorial service. Facebook said that thirty minutes after the start of the service, 800,000 status updates had flowed throughly the system, or roughly 6,000 a minute. In addition, the company said there were 300,000 users logged into the special Facebook-CNN site. Facebook also said that Michael Jackson had close to 7 million fans on his official Facebook page, giving him the largest single following of any public figure on the site - including President Obama, who clocks in with just 6 million fans.
