US to send 34,000 more troops to Afghanistan

Monday, November 30th, 2009

President Barack Obama vowed to “finish the job” in Afghanistan as he finalizes a decision on deploying tens of thousands of more troops to turn around the war against the Taliban.Amid reports he will authorize 34,000 more US soldiers to take on Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters, Obama said he was determined to wipe out the insurgency and would end months of deliberation after Thursday’s Thanksgiving holiday.

Obama, accused of dithering on his decision, said he would make it clear “the Afghan people ultimately are going to have to provide for their own security,” and would call on allies in Europe and beyond to help. “After eight years, some of those years in which we did not have, I think, wither the resources or the strategy to get the job done, it is my intention to finish the job,” he said after talks on Tuesday with Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh. “We are going to dismantle and degrade their capabilities and ultimately dismantle and destroy their networks. And Afghanistan’s stability is important to that process.

Obama faces a public sharply divided on the war and calls from Democratic allies to set a flexible timetable for withdrawal eight years after US-led forces invaded Afghanistan following the September 11, 2001 attacks. “I feel very confident that when the American people hear a clear rationale for what we are doing there and how we intend to achieve our goals, that they will be supportive,” he predicted. Obama also said “the whole world” has a responsibility to help the US-led mission in Afghanistan, and his announcement would detail “the obligations of our international partners.” The president has been weighing requests from his Afghan war commander, General Stanley McChrystal, to send up to 40,000 more troops to join 68,000 US troops already there.

Google says sorry to US first lady

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Google has apologized over a racially offensive picture of US first lady Michelle Obama, which appears when users search for images of Michelle, the BBC has reported. Google placed a notice over the image, warning “Offensive Search Results”, saying: “Some times, our search results can be offensive. We agree.” However, it refused to remove the picture from its search results. The White House did not comment. A BBC report said users who click on the notice above the image are directed to a statement from Google which explains that its results “can include disturbing content, even from innocuous queries.” We apologize if you have had an upsetting experience using Google,” it further adds.

Google says a website’s ranking in its search results relies heavily on computer algorithms, using thousands of factors to calculate a page’s relevance to a given query. But the search engine says it does not remove images simply because it receives complaints. “Google views the integrity of our search results as an extremely important priority,” it said, adding that: “Accordingly, we do not remove a page from our search results simply because its content is unpopular or because we receive complaints concerning it.” However, the company said it would take down certain images, if required by law to do so. A Google spokesperson would not give details on how the image ended up as top result for Michelle.

David Vise, a Pulitzer prize winning journalist and author of The Google Story told the BBC that Google results get to the top based on popularity, not because of any ranking system used by the search engine. “If Google got a call from the White House telling them it is against the law to have an offensive image of this kind which portrays the first lady in a racist manner as a monkey or an ape, then they would be obliged to take it down and I am sure they would do so immediately,” he said.

High hopes for Africa’s six finalists

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

Africa will have a record total of six teams in the next week’s draw for the World Cup finals and there are high expectations for the continent. Five nations went through the qualification process and hosts South Africa were given an automatic berth for the first finals on African soil. The emergence of top-class players like Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o and Michael Essien has led to the continent’s increased sense of exception.

Cameroon will be competing at an African record sixth finals and Nigeria play for the fourth time. Algeria and South Africa have been to two previous World Cups but the region’s best hopes could rest with Ghana and Ivory Coast, who both participate for only he second time. Brazilian great Pele and former England manager Walter Winterbottom predicted Africa would produce a World Cup winner by the end of the 20th century but the region is still waiting to get a team to the semifinals. The best performance by an African side has come from Cameroon and Senegal, almost 12 years apart.

Senegal created several shocks en route to the quarter-finals in 2002 while Cameroon brought a charismatic charm and a bruising bite to their run to the last eight in 1990 before bowing out in extra-time to England. Only one of the five African teams present made it beyond the group stages in Germany in 2006 and Ghana were immediately dispatched by Brazil in the first knockout round. Repeated success for Ghana and Nigeria at junior level has suggested future potential but it has failed to materialize at senior soccer.

Relationship between India, US finds its mojo

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

Face to face, United States President Obama seems even more unflappable, cerebral and dispassionate than he appears on the television. Ironically, we can say the same about Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. It is no surprise then that the two got along famously. India need not fear a drift in the US-India partnership in Obama’s watch, say analysts weighing on the visit.

The four-day visit ran its course with no uncomfortable moments despite the fact that US and India failed to tie up a pact designed to ensure that New Delhi will not reprocess American-sold nuclear fuel into weapons- grade material. Both sides remained optimistic that it would get done. Obama unequivocally committed his administration to the full implementation of the nuclear deal, describing it an opportunity to “increase American exports and create jobs.”

Earlier this year, Indians were taken aback by references in General Stanley McChrystal’s report describing India’s role in Afghanistan as provocative toward Pakistan. By dint of history, the US and India find themselves supporting mutual goals in Afghanistan, including the development of a democratic government that will nix the Taliban from regaining power. India brimmed with pleasure that US “appreciated” India’s role in Afghanistan and “agreed to enhance their respective efforts”.

The Obama-Manmohan joint statement also echoes the Indian charge about Pakistani doublespeak on terrorism. It keeps the pressure on Islamabad to eliminate terrorist safe heavens. Analysts weighed in on the joint statement to pronounce Manmohan’s visit a “creditable success”. Obama also made amends to the glaring omission of India in his Asia-Pacific speech delivered at Tokyo en route to China by saying India today is a rising global power. The visit was useful as Manmohan Singh also used his alone time with the US president to raise India’s concerns about Chinese border incursions. Although Washington is following a Sino-centric Asia policy, the US is unlikely to stand idle if Beijing were to further inflame border tensions.

Melting ice threat to sea life

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

Melting of the Arctic sea ice due to global warming is diluting surface waters and this is endangering some species of shellfish which need minerals in the water to form their shells and skeletons, scientists have found. In a paper published in Science , they warned that this has serious implications for ecosystems in the Arctic. “Organisms that are likely to be affected are from the family of pteropods, also mussels and clams on the sea floor,” said Fiona McLaughlin, research scientist at Canada’s Institute of Ocean Science’s department of fisheries and oceans.

Pteropods are minute swimming sea snails. “It puts the food chain at risk. These organisms are a food source for fish that are a food source for seals and bears. The food chain in the Arctic is quite a short one, so it is quite vulnerable,” she said. Meltwater from sea ice pours into the Canada Basin and researchers is Canada have been monitoring the quality of water in the basin, the largest freshwater reservoir in the world, since the late 1980s. McLaughlin said there was now sufficient to show a fall in the concentration of aragonite, a mineral or calcium carbonate that is needed in shell formation.

“Sea ice is so pure it has very few of these (carbonate) ions. It means that when we are melting this ice, which by its nature more acidic, we are making surface waters more acidic,” said McLaughlin. “The shells cannot maintain themselves, they are now susceptible to dissolution. Instead of being a source of carbonate for these organisms to use, the surface waters are now corrosive to them,” she added.

Hillary emerges as key link to Karzai

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

It is far from clear that President Obama can depend on President Hamid Karzai to bring order to this violent country but it is becoming clear that he will depend on Hillary Clinton to be his go-between in dealing with the mercurial Afghan leader. In a visit to Kabul, during which she held a 90-minute, one-on-one session with Mr.Karzai on Wednesday, and in an intense telephone call a few weeks ago in the after-maths of Afghanistan’s election, Secretary of State Clinton has built an unlikely rapport with the Afghan leader, according to administration officials.

It is a new and risky role for Ms Clinton - one that thrusts her into the thick of the administration’s most critical international problem, but that also hitches her reputation to a leader who has often proved unreliable. If Mr. Karzai lets down the White House again, Ms Clinton, as his principal intermediary with the administration, could find herself damaged along with him. Ms Clinton, who got to know Mr. Karzai in 2005 when she took him to Fort Drum in upstate New York to thank US veterans of the Afghan war, seems to recognize the potential dangers.

“When I came into the administration, I was one of the few people who had a long-term positive relationship with President Karzai,” Mrs.Clinton said in an interview on Thursday, hours after seeing him get sworn in. “I continue to believe he has a tremendous historical opportunity.” But she added, “That does not mean you make excuses for behavior that you want to see changed; you constantly push back.”
