You are welcome in Canada: PM to refugees

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has a message for refugees rejected by Donald Trump: Canada will welcome you. He said that he also intended to talk to Trump about the success of Canada’s refugee policy. Trudeau reacted to Trump’s visa ban for people from seven Muslim-majority countries by tweeting on Saturday, “To those fleeing persecution, terror and war, Canadians will welcome you, regardless of your faith. Diversity is out strength #Welcome to Canada.” Trudeau also posted a picture of him greeting a Syrian child at Toronto’s airport in 2015. Trudeau oversaw the arrival of more than 39,000 Syrian refugees soon after he was elected as a president.

A spokesperson for Trudeau, Kate Purchase said, “The Prime Minister is looking forward to discussing the successes of Canada’s immigration and refugee policy with the President when they next speak.” Trudeau is expected to visit the White House soon. The PM has refrained from criticising Trump to avoid offending the new president. Canada wants to avoid becoming a target like Mexico has. More than 75% of the Canadian exports go to the United States. Brad Wall, the conservative premier of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, offered his support to Trudeau.

Trump to scrap TPP, renegotiate NAFTA

U.S. President Donald Trump could sign an executive order as early as Monday intended to renegotiate the free trade agreement between the U.S., Canada and Mexico, NBC News reported, citing an unidentified White House official. In addition to wanting to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the new Republican President also intends to sign an executive order pulling out the Trans-Pacific Partnership, NBC reported. Mr. Trump, who was sworn in as the 45th U.S. President on Friday, targeted both trade pacts during his White House campaign.

Officials were not immediately available to confirm the report to Reuters. The President said on Sunday that he will plan talks soon with the leaders of Canada and Mexico to begin renegotiating NAFTA. “We will be starting negotiations having to do with NAFTA,” Mr. Trump said at a swearing-in ceremony for his top White House advisers. “We are going to start renegotiating on NAFTA, on immigration and on security at the border,” Mr. Trump said during the campaign he wanted to secure more favorable terms for the U.S. in the NAFTA pact.
